Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat and add the finely chopped onion. Cook until onions are golden brown.

Add minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, and salt to the pot, stir and cook for 1 minute.

Add the drained and rinsed chickpeas to the pot, and cook for 4-5 minutes while continuously stirring.

Stir in the basmati rice and then add 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil.

Cover the pot with a lid, lower the heat to low, and let the rice cook for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked through and the water has been absorbed.
