Plastic wrap, also known as cling film or food wrap, is a thin plastic film typically used for sealing and preserving food items in domestic settings. Made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), it acts as a protective barrier, preventing air, moisture, and contaminants from affecting the quality and freshness of the food being stored. The transparent nature of plastic wrap allows for easy identification and monitoring of the contents inside.
Often found on a roll in a cardboard box with a cutting edge, plastic wrap clings to a variety of surfaces, such as glass, ceramic, and metal due to its flexible and slightly adhesive nature. This versatile product aids in keeping food items fresh, covering containers or wrapping individual portions, and can also be used to prevent freezer burn in frozen foods. However, plastic wrap is not recommended for use with high heat, such as microwaving or oven baking, as it may melt and release chemicals into the food.
