Expiration & Storage Tips
When does breaded chicken expire?
Unopened, packaged breaded chicken from the grocery store should be safe to eat until the expiry date printed on the package, usually for about a few weeks to a few months. Once you've opened the package, it's best to consume the breaded chicken within 3 to 4 days. If you've cooked the chicken at home, you can safely consume it within 3 to 4 days when stored in the fridge. If you decide to freeze the breaded chicken, whether it's store-bought or homemade, it can last up to 4 months before the quality starts to decline, though it'll still be safe to eat past this time.
How do you tell if breaded chicken is bad?
If you notice a sour or unpleasant smell, it's a strong indicator that the chicken has gone bad. Changes in color to a dull gray or greenish color, along with a slimy texture, also suggest spoilage. It’s best to promptly discard any breaded chicken showing these signs of spoilage. Remember, consuming spoiled chicken can lead to foodborne illness.
Tips for storing breaded chicken to extend shelf life
• Make sure to keep the breaded chicken in an airtight container or zip-lock bag when you store it in the refrigerator or freezer.
• If you've cooked extra breaded chicken, allow it to cool at room temperature before storing it to prevent condensation and soggy breading.
• When freezing breaded chicken, placing a piece of wax paper between each piece can prevent them from sticking together, making portion control easier for later use.
• To defrost frozen breaded chicken, it’s best to let it slowly thaw overnight in the refrigerator. If you need to thaw it quickly, use the defrost function on your microwave.
• When reheating breaded chicken, consider using an oven or an air fryer instead of the microwave to maintain the crispy texture.
